When I heard the song, and was reading the lyrics it immediately resonated with my own visions. Of what I decided to name A Universal Union. The name simply came about by thinking about the freshly elected president in the “united” states of America, in 2024. I thought about how their union was beginning to crack under the weight of fracturing opinions. I thought: “A more perfect union.. more like a worsening union”
I was trying to come up with a name for the project idea. Up to that point it was just a cloud of ideas, mechanisms, and so on… much like this blog is and has been. By contrast to the worsening union, I arrived upon the Universal Union. In a bit of irony I found out, after the fact, that the name was taken already by the game Half-Life. Actually, I’m not sure if that’s irony or not.. but I also don’t care to think hard about it. In a synchronistic interaction days before the election results, my sister sent me a video. In the video she was showing her steam library, which was freshly populated with all my games shared through the family library mechanism. She pointed directly at the Half-Life poster/icon with Gordon Freeman and said he stole my look.
I don’t remember if I had yet started writing, or if I was only finding God through scripture and youtube at the time. By the end of November 2024 I had half written the first version of the project design document. It wasn’t very in depth, but it had the heart of it. It wasn’t until after I had emailed the document to various people that I learned the name was already taken in Gordon Freeman’s universe.
The next development really came in August 2025. The document wasn’t scrupulous enough, and it was difficult to understand for people with their heads out of the clouds. So I treated it more like an academic paper. I expanded ideas, and cited papers that either did or could provide a backbone for proper development. I also recorded three youtube videos that were an attempt to give form to a constellation of spiritual revelations. I did the best I could at the time, with the understanding I had achieved at that time.
Much the same can be said of the present state of A Universal Union on github. Presently there is a v4.0 document, and a slew of issues I’ve opened for various tasks that need to be undertaken should the project want to manifest as a reality for the individuals and collective peoples living on this planet.
I’m not a saviour, and it isn’t my intent to come off that way. My intent is collaboration. None of us can do anything alone in this world.. not even introspection because that often arises after conflict with another.
So, if you’re reading these words. Read these words, particularly those of whatever document has the highest version number. Then bring your ideas to the table. It won’t be me alone doing anything that fixes anything. It might bring me fulfillment to know I tried, but it won’t solve anything without your involvement. The problems I’ve solved so far are primarily technical in nature. Specifically how technology can support social endeavours, but that’s just an interface. The problem is a lot more complex than finding an interface.
